Copy of RUBBISH - Reusing Trash in Tanzania
Once traveling to Tanzania, I was surprised to see trash cover the streets only to be burned, and not recycled. With that on my mind, when the village leader asked for the American to make decorations, I thought of instantly reusing the "rubbish". All of the villagers thought I was crazy picking up all of the trash surrounding the village, even asking for their extra scraps of fabric when sewing. I quickly learned trash was "takataka" in swahili, and quickly started production with the villagers. Now, the villagers have a creative and fun project that they can participate in every year, and have decorations that can be reused. In addition, their village has a use for all of the rubbish and they see trash now in a different way.
